Gone are the days of global virus outbreaks. Today's threat is targeted, stealth-like and profit-driven as malicious coders attempt to steal passwords, capture credit card details, bring websites down and process phony orders. Almost every business attempts to protect their network from these nasties, but how do you know which solution is right for your network?

Here is a simple checklist to help you choose:

  1. Protect every entry point - Secure your network beyond the traditional entry points of compact disc and email. A security product should have the capability of scanning IM (instant messaging), HTTP and FTP (web) and phones that synchronise with your PC (e.g. your new iPhone). Trend Micro's Worry-Free Business Security is an example of a product that protects you at every entry point.
  2. Don't forget remote users - If you have staff that are regularly out of the office then make sure your security product can update itself through the Internet without being connected to your network. Beware of the travelling laptop!
  3. Central management - It's likely you don't have the time to individually manage security at every computer. A decent security product should give you the ability to manage updates, manual scans and policies from one (preferably browser-based) console, ideal if you have five or more computers.
  4. Best detection rates - Certain security products detect more malicious code than others. Read reviews from an independent body such as Virus Bulletin because they employ stringent criteria and rigorous testing. It will only take you a few minutes to identify which brands and products have the highest, and most accurate, detection rates.
  5. Support for your Operating Systems (OS) - Sounds basic, right? OS support can sometimes be overlooked. If your network comprises of multiple Operating Systems (e.g. Vista, XP, Windows Server & Mac OS) then make sure your security product works on all platforms.
  6. Responsive, local technical support -You will experience a security breach at some point in your work life - it's inevitable. We suggest you buy from a supplier who offers local, toll free phone support so you get the help you need when things turn bad. Oh, and go for the 24x7 support option if you can afford it.
  7. Understand your Total Cost of Ownership - Consider that most security products are sold as a service (under subscription) and must be renewed annually. Investigate the renewal price before you make your initial purchase. Each manufacturer has different licensing periods and renewal costs so don't be afraid to ask the question.
  8. Look for sweeteners - Expect that most security vendors provide free trial periods so take advantage where you can. Also, if you have less than three computers, then be aware that some brands (e.g. Trend Micro) provide protection for three PCs at the price of one!
